It is the mission of the Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana (NWISOI) to recognize and honor innovation of all kinds across the Northwest Indiana region. Each year, one group is awarded NWISOI’s top prize in team innovation known as the Accelerating Greatness Award. This award is sponsored by Innovation Fellow Tom Sourlis.
Sourlis was inducted as a Fellow into the Society in 2010 for his innovations in structural engineering. He got his start studying architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology. He then went on to found Sourlis Masonry Restoration which worked to repair structures that had been compromised due to water infiltration in the mortar.
After 25 years, Sourlis developed and patented a product which he sold across the industry. This venture lead to the founding Mortar Net Solutions in Burns Harbor, where Sourlis now serves as the Chairman.
Over the course of his career, Sourlis has worked on such notable buildings as The Rookery, The John J. Glessner House, Holy Family Church and the Chicago Water Tower.
In recent years, Sourlis has used his financial success to support numerous charitable organizations across Northwest Indiana. He has also founding Sourlis Glass Studio in Highland where he makes and sells glass lamps that have received national recognition.
This year’s Accelerating Greatness Award for Team Innovation was presented to Urschel Laboratories, Inc. in Chesterton. They have been creating innovations in cutting machines for industrial kitchens for many years. However, recently, Urschel has positioned itself to be a major player in the global market. This innovation in business strategy is what garnered them the Accelerating Greatness Award for 2016-2017.
Tom Sourlis and Urschel Laboratories are just two of the many great innovators that have been honored by the Society over the years. To learn more about Society Members and Fellows or what it takes to be honored, visit www.NWISOI.org.
