NWISOI Recognizes Individuals for their Contributions to NWI

The Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana (NWISOI) acknowledges those who strive to improve their industry by inducting them as a Member. Learn about some of the NWISOI Members inducted this past year for their varied and notable works:

Joe Bavuso- A union representative at Gary Works, Joe learned how to repair cranes used in steelmaking. Aware of how dangerous this task is, he built a crane simulator used in training programs. In 2015, he received the Crane Innovator of the Year Award from the Association of Iron & Steel Technology. His simulator reduces hazards and saves lives; it is named the Herb Tollman Trainer, after a co-worker who died while reparing a crane.

Speros Batistatos- Speros is president and CEO of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority (SSCVA). He is also a Member of the Society of Innovators. Speros was recently elected to his first two-year term as an at-large director of the United States Travel Association. As part of his new role speros will attend meetings in Washington D.C., where he also hopes to speak with Indiana representatives about issues concerning the region and bring back new ideas to boost tourism in NWI.

Carl Lisek- Call works with both Legacy Environmental Services and South Shore Clean Cities, both of which are NWISOI Member organizations. He also hosts the Green Radio Network, a local radio show that works to highlight green projects occurring at the local, state and national levels. Through this show, Carl has been able to increase awareness across the region when it comes to green projects and how they benefit NWI.
